Each regional will emphasize the strenghths of their membership while seeking to provide new and exciting professional development in this area. Curriculum modules developed for the NACADA Regional Conference Technology Seminars may be used interchangeably to accomplish the particular goals and objectives developed by the technology seminar leadership in the region. In each case the region has the freedom to use all modules, some modules, or one module.

 Module 1
All day 5.5 hours plus a lunch break

A hands on, interactive technology experience for academic advisors. Particpants will discuss username and password issues which apply to all the applications which will be discussed, establish at least one account, and focus on utilizing the latest web-based technologies including:
Blogs-applications such as WordPress will explore the purposes for blogs in academic advising, begin working on a blog, and discuss blog ideas with other participants including portential audience, content, and authors.
Wikis as advising knowledgebases-at least one wiki application will be explored by participants. Brief introduction to the wiki as a tool for the management of advising information. Examples of advising wikis will be explored live.
learning how to Microblog as in Twitter-various examples of the use of microblogging in academic advising. Opportunities to discuss the place of microblogging in advising. Hands on experience with the power of microblogging tools.
Facebook - beyond an introduction to the most prevelant social networking application in higher education.
RSS to repurpose your content
assessment of your website data using free online analytical tools
social bookmarking-its purpose, and the insight it provides into the philosophies inherent in advising and technology
demonstration of social media communications planning

 Module 2
Half day 3 hours

what part of the above will be done on day 2? Could it be something that could stand alone in the spirit of the module approach? Perhaps the social media communication planning? (I like this as the 3 hour module)

 Module 3
Preconference 2 hours

This is a separate session aimed at folks who want more of a technology summary with useful takeaways. A potpourri of social media tools will be presented that can be added to anyone's academic advising toolkit. Technologies to be presented include: blogs and microblogs (Twitter), RSS, online surveys, tools for advisor productivity, and wikis.

Karen Thurmond

Since leaving Clearwater in February, I have been busily attempting to get back to my dissertation proposal. But like the Godfather line ("everytime I think I am out, they keep pulling me back in again!) I just can't seem to get away from the theme of advising and technology. In mid March I attended the NACADA Region 4 conference at Mississippi State University. Charlie Nutt spoke on the Future of Academic Advising. He emphasized that advisors must become fluent with technology and do more research. At the end of March, I attended the Instructional Technology Conference at Middle Tennessee State University. The final presenter set the stage for, and partially defined, Web 3.0. In April, I was asked to speak at the Indiana Academic Advising Network (IAAN) concerning the future of academic advising. After consulting Charlie about his top priority for preparing for the future, I began to think about what we might need to do as a profession in order to prepare for possible future scenarios.

My recommendations:
Develop technological compentencies for the purpose of enhanced communication/relationship formation
Contribute to the efficiencies of your institution
Be prepared to embrace all kinds of students preparing for all kinds of work

The presentation is available on http://slideshare.net/kthurmnd

Recommended reading on this topic includes a wonderful NEA resource that was published in response to the Spellings Report.

I also did a session on Twitter at IAAN. There are still so many bad things about twitter that I had a hard time recommending it. But I think those who attended the concurrent at least know what it is now. We looked up John Mayer.

In May NACADA Region 3 met in Charleston, WV. We piloted a live feed through Ustream of a few sessions. The process of designing best practices for a remote conference is underway. How do learners access professional development? In what ways can remote learners be engaged in the process? How do those ways differ from what learners would do in the classroom? How will presenters of NACADA type presentations need to change their preparation and presentation in order to engage a remote audience?

Along the way my extended family has discovered each other on facebook, and we are planning a reunion this summer using a facebook group. Woohoo! MyHeritage.com is helping us with the family tree. Our logo was developed by one of my second cousins in an art class, photographed with a digital camera, photo edited using flickr.

Connie Eggers

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Works in Progress

Advising 2.0 Updates from the Clearwater Clear Thinkers...What are you working on?

Add a page for your update by clicking "Works in Progress" on the menu at the left, and then "add a new page" at the bottom of the menu at the left. Some systems provide appointment scheduling, access student information from the student information system (Banner, PeopleSoft, etc.). Reports are another feature of these systems.
Aggregators
Aggregators reduce the time and effort needed to regularly check websites for updates, creating a unique information space or "personal newspaper." Once subscribed to a feed, an aggregator is able to check for new content at user-determined intervals and retrieve the update. The content is sometimes described as being "pulled" to the subscriber, as opposed to "pushed" with email or IM. Unlike recipients of some "pushed" information, the aggregator user can easily unsubscribe from a feed.
Blog
A blog (a contraction of the term " Web log ") is a web site with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog .
Customer Relationship Management Systems (CRM)
Group of computer processes implemented by a company to handle contact with its customers. CRM software is used to support these processes, storing information on current and prospective customers. The stored information provides intelligence about “customers” to enhance the relationship between customer and company. In higher education as well as in business, this intelligence can be used to help students navigate their degree programs by reminding them about the most logical resources at the most logical times. CRM is the reason Amazon knows the types of books you might be interested in buying.
Degree Audits
A degree audit is a computer-generated analysis that enables the student and his/her adviser to assess the student's academic progress and unfulfilled baccalaureate, associate degree, or minor requirements. The audit is a valuable tool for academic planning and course selection, because it matches the courses that the student has taken with the requirements of his/her degree program or anticipated program.
Hyperlinks
An element in an electronic document that links to another place in the same document or to an entirely different document. Typically, you click on the hyperlink to follow the link. Hyperlinks are the most essential ingredient of all hypertext systems, including the World Wide Web.
Hypertext
A system invented by Ted Nelson in the 1960s in which objects (text, pictures, music , programs, and so on) can be creatively linked to each other. In the process of development of source code for software that code is made available for public collaboration.
Podcast
A podcast is a series of audio or video files which is distributed over the Internet by download, to portable media players (like iPod) and personal computers. Though the same content may also be made available by download or listening/viewing on a personal computer or apple computer, a podcast is distinguished from other digital-media formats by its ability to be subscribed to and downloaded automatically when new content is added.
Social Networking Sites Online communities of people who share interests or who are interested in exploring the interests of others. Most social network services provide a variety of ways for users to interact. Examples of social networking sites include facebook and myspace.
Virtual Worlds
A virtual world is a computer-based simulated environment intended for its users to inhabit and interact via avatars. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple mechanism for creating new pages and connections between internal pages.
Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage.
